What We’re All About
The Wilmington Farmer’s Market was formed by a group of local farmers in the spring of 2018. We are committed to offering the Port City a farmers market with integrity that would meet the demand for high quality, clean, locally grown food. The market board of directors is made up of farmers and value added producers who listen to the needs of this community and implement fair and just rules for the vendors. We exist to provide the best local produce, meats, eggs, bread, mushrooms, seafood and other staple food items that the shoppers want, and to generate income for our farms and families. We hope you decide to come visit us so you can discover what a valuable asset the Wilmington Farmers Market is to this community.
The Wilmington Farmers Market envisions a space in Wilmington, NC that is home to a diverse, interconnected food system that promotes healthy food, sustainable ecosystems, and opportunity for local small-scale farmers to be successful. The Market constantly positions itself as a leader in this system, leveraging the power of communities by providing resources, educational programs and sustainable modes of food distribution, benefiting farmers, producers, chefs, and consumers.
Our Mission
The Wilmington Farmers Market at Tidal Creek aims to create and sustain a vibrant and innovative farmers market that supports our local farmers and producers, while extending the benefits of local food to the greater community. To honor the rich heritage of the Market, we seek to work with our:
Members: To provide the best venue, support to nurture, and maintain healthy sustainable farms and producer-based business opportunities while working to establish and strengthen local food systems based around small family farms. We prioritize transparency, with direct connections between producers and consumers.
Customers: To provide access to the highest quality fresh local food in an environment that fosters the relationship between farmer, producers, and all customers in a locale rife with food deserts and underprivileged communities.
Community: To create a strong local food ethic and opportunity for our greater Wilmington, NC community, and being a force for building healthier, more resilient communities across the Greater Wilmington region.
Our Goals
Members: Create and increase opportunities for farmers and producers to sell their products directly to consumers
Customers: Create and increase consumers’ opportunities to buy local products directly from farmers, while simultaneously encouraging a diverse consumer base and to serve all economic levels including the food insecure. Currently, our market is the only one in the region that provides fresh food opportunities to the undeserved and looks to increase access to healthy, local foods for low-income, at-risk populations. We remain focused on:
Encouraging the ongoing use of the SNAP/EBT programs currently utilized by the market.
Continuing our ongoing partnership with New Hanover County Department of Health and Human Services to enable their clients to shop at the market through a health outreach program.
Community: To expand the reach of the Market and being a force for building healthier communities.
Continue and strengthen partnerships with local food banks and organizations focused on improving conditions for undeserved communities.
Continue and strengthen relationships with local organizations focused on sustainable local ecosystems and improvement of soil, water, and other environmental subsystems and critical to the betterment of local communities.
Work with and collaborate with other local non-profits in the execution of our Vision and Mission while acting as a facilitator within our community to support and fund raise for other area organizations with similar views and goals.
